SSPS is currently seeking Special Constables for a part-time, one-year contract position with the possibility of extension.
About the role
Special Constables are civilian members appointed by the Police Services Board. In this role, you are responsible for court and building security, prisoner care and management, and a range of court-related administrative duties on behalf of the Service. Special Constables carry responsibilities outlined in Section 92 of the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA), including general duties, qualifications, and competencies required of the position.
What You Will Do
As a Special Constable, you will perform a variety of duties in support of court operations, prisoner management, and public safety.
- Provide security at all court facilities within SSPS jurisdiction.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all prisoners in police custody.
- Act as a liaison with Crown Attorneys, defence counsel, prosecutors, the judiciary, victim services, other government agencies, and the public.
- Facilitate Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court.
- Assist with the preparation, issuance, and review of court documentation, including managing and maintaining briefs for POA, Criminal, and YCJA courts.
- Facilitate disclosure requests and send trial notices to officers.
- Serve and track documents, including summonses, subpoenas, disclosure, motions, appeals, and Provincial Offence Notices for SSPS and other police services, and execute warrants while ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Assist officers in physically searching and caring for prisoners in holding cells.
- Manage prisoners to ensure they are presented at court in a timely manner.
- Participate in prisoner transportation, including walking escorts, secure placements in detention facilities for young persons, and arranging judges’ orders and transfers.
- Collect DNA samples and assist with fingerprinting prisoners, as required.
- Participate in and complete all required training and other duties as assigned based on organizational needs.
What You Bring to the Role
To be considered for the Special Constable position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements.
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Successful completion of a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent experience.
- Meets all requirements listed under Section 92 of the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA).
- Holds a valid Ontario G-class driver’s licence (or higher).
- Appointed Special Constables must successfully complete all requisite training as prescribed by the CSPA.
- Certified in CPR/First Aid at the time of hire.
- Successful completion of a physical fitness evaluation.
A detailed background investigation is required for the successful individual.
