SOUTH SIMCOE POLICE ISSUE WARNING ON DISTRACTION THEFTS
(BRADFORD/INNISFIL, ON) – South Simcoe Police have received recent reports of distraction thefts and are reminding the public to remain vigilant. These thefts often involve offenders using clever distractions to steal wallets, phones, jewelry, and other valuables. As part of Crime Prevention Week, South Simcoe Police are emphasizing the importance of staying aware, taking precautions, and practicing simple safety measures to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
How Distraction Thefts Happen
Criminals commonly target individuals who appear trusting or are alone in public spaces or on their property. Offenders often work in pairs or groups and use a variety of tactics, including:
• Sharing a sad story with you to create an empathetic response.
• Knocking on a door to ask for help.
• Asking for directions.
• Spilling something on you.
• Pretending to need help.
• Damaging a vehicle.
• Pretending to give you a gift for good luck.
• Starting an argument.
While the victim is distracted, personal belongings are taken – often in public places, parking lots, out front of your house and even at your front door.
Who’s targeted?
Anyone can be a target, but older adults, those who appear trusting, individuals alone, and people wearing visible jewelry are particularly vulnerable. Wallets, cell phones, and purse contents are common targets.
If You Are a Victim or Witness:
• Do not follow the suspect.
• Call police immediately.
• Note physical descriptions, vehicle details, and any unique features of the suspect(s).
Tips to Protect Yourself:
• Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
• Keep your belongings close, zipped, and hidden when possible.
• Exercise caution when approached by strangers exhibiting unusual or overly engaging behaviour.
• Avoid placing valuables on tables or hanging bags on chairs in public spaces.
• Report suspicious or criminal incidents immediately.
• Keep records and photos of your valuables.
South Simcoe Police urge everyone to remain alert and take precautions to protect themselves and their belongings.
