A pardon allows individuals who have been convicted of a criminal offence, but have completed their sentence and maintained a law-abiding record for a set period, to have their criminal record kept separate from other criminal records.
When granted, federal agencies must keep the conviction records separate and remove the information from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system.
