(INNISFIL, ON) – A suspicious vehicle investigation by the South Simcoe Police Service has resulted in the recovery of a stolen high-end vehicle and multiple criminal charges against a Brampton man.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m., an officer observed a Dodge Durango SRT parked at the rest stop along Highway 400 in Innisfil. The vehicle had a flat tire, a heavily tinted licence-plate cover and several indicators that its vehicle identification number may have been altered.
Members of the South Simcoe Police Service Street Crime Unit assisted with the investigation and determined that the displayed VIN belonged to a salvage vehicle from Michigan. Further examination confirmed that the vehicle was a 2024 Dodge Durango SRT reported stolen in Toronto on April 26, 2026.
While police were investigating the Durango, a black Ford Explorer ST arrived and parked beside it. The occupants appeared unaware that police were already at the location. One occupant approached the Durango while the Explorer left the immediate area.
Police later located the Explorer near Highway 89 and Sideroad 5. The vehicle fled when officers attempted to stop it and continued toward Highway 400. The pursuit was discontinued for public-safety reasons, and the Ontario Provincial Police were notified. The Explorer was later intercepted by the OPP on Highway 400 southbound, where it again failed to stop and fled from police. Police subsequently confirmed that the Explorer had also been reported stolen. That portion of the investigation remains ongoing.
A male associated with the Durango was arrested. A search of the vehicle and property connected to the accused resulted in the seizure of:
- A stolen Ontario licence plate;
- A prohibited switchblade knife;
- Oleoresin capsicum spray;
- Break-and-enter tools;
- Liquor believed to have been stolen from an LCBO;
- An automobile master key;
- Blank vehicle key fobs; and
- Additional evidence associated with vehicle theft and VIN alteration.
A 26-year-old Brampton man has been charged with:
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000;
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000;
- Possession of an automobile master key;
- Possession of break-in instruments;
- Two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon;
- Altering, removing or obliterating a vehicle identification number;
- Two counts of failing to comply with a release order;
- Three counts of breach of recognizance; and
- Six counts of breach of probation.
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
