(INNISFIL/BRADFORD, ON) – Further to the warning issued in July regarding this type of fraud, South Simcoe Police continue to see an increase in reports involving fraudsters impersonating telecommunications companies and offering fraudulent promotions for free or discounted phones, tablets and other electronic devices.
In these scams, victims receive unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to represent companies such as Rogers or Fido. The caller may offer a special promotion and arrange for devices to be delivered to the victim’s home. After delivery, the fraudster may claim there is a problem with the order or device and instruct the victim to return the items or arrange for someone to collect them.
Victims may later discover unauthorized charges on their accounts, while the devices are no longer in their possession.
These scams can appear very convincing. The public is reminded to take time to independently verify any unexpected promotion before providing information, accepting devices, or returning them. A legitimate-looking caller ID does not mean the call is genuine, as phone numbers can be spoofed.
PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE
South Simcoe Police remind the public to:
- Be cautious of unsolicited calls offering free devices or exclusive promotions.
- Never provide personal, banking, or account information to an unexpected caller.
- Verify promotions directly with the company using the number on your bill or its official website.
- Never call a number provided by an unsolicited caller.
- Do not allow an unknown person to collect a package or device from your residence.
- Review your accounts regularly for unauthorized charges or suspicious activity.
If you believe you have been targeted, contact your service provider directly and report the incident to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
