Police Uncover Theft Before It Was Reported

(Bradford, ON) South Simcoe Police Service officers uncovered the theft of an outboard motor in Bradford before the owner knew the motor was stolen.

On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, around 4:30 p.m., police conducting traffic enforcement near Pumphouse Road and Canal Road in Bradford stopped a pickup truck that had gone through a stop sign. The officer noticed what appeared to be an almost brand new Tohatsu outboard motor being transported improperly on its side and leaking oil in the back of the pickup. A check revealed that the motor was not reported stolen. The driver was charged with disobeying a stop sign and sent on his way.

The next day, Thursday, July 25, 2019, further investigation revealed the true identity of the motor’s owner who was unaware of the theft. Officers located the pickup truck driver and charged the 29-year-old Bradford man with theft and possession of property obtained by crime. The stolen motor had already been sold but through investigation, it was located at a Keswick marina and returned to its rightful owner.

A photo of the recovered motor is attached.
