TWO SEPARATE MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS DUE TO FLASH FREEZING AND POOR ROAD CONDITIONS
(INNISFIL, ON) – On November 21, 2024, at approximately 7:35 a.m. South Simcoe Police received a call from a driver that witnessed two separate motor vehicle collisions, both on Sideroad 5 near Georgian Downs in Innisfil.
The first vehicle, Grey Buick, was travelling southbound on Sideroad 5 when the vehicle began to slide into the east side ditch landing on its roof. The driver was able to exit the vehicle. The driver was transported by ambulance to hospital as a precautionary measure. At approximately the same time, a second vehicle, White Chevrolet Malibu transporting two passengers, was travelling in the same direction when it began to slide on black ice causing the vehicle to go into the west side ditch and collide into a fence. The driver and passengers reported no injuries.
South Simcoe Police, Innisfil Fire and Ambulance were on scene to assess the incident, and police closed the roadway for the duration of the collision investigation. The road has since been reopened.
No charges were laid to either driver due to the poor roadway conditions at the time of the collision.
Flash freezing occurs when temperatures rapidly drop causing damp services to freeze almost instantly. This can create hazardous road conditions as they may become icy and dangerous. South Simcoe Police urge drivers to use extreme caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, reduce speed, avoid sudden brakes and movements, and maintain a safe following distance. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready and stay alert.
