We will continue year-round RIDE Programs in our ongoing efforts to apprehend impaired drivers. Over the course of 2019, we more than doubled the number of RIDE Programs with spot checks every two days. Public safety, especially on our roads remains our top priority. Thank you to every citizen who made the right choice to drive sober. Huge shout out to everyone who called 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
*Since May 2019, South Simcoe Police Service has been using The Drager DrugTest 5000. This mobile drug screening system uses oral fluid that currently tests for THC and cocaine. It was the first drug detection device approved for police use in Canada. SSPS currently has five of the devices primarily deployed for use in the Traffic Unit. The pro-active use of these devices can account for the number of Novice/21 years and under – presence of drugs charges.
We will have to wait until the end of Festive RIDE 2020 to compare data.
