Canine Unit

The South Simcoe Police Canine (K9) Unit was formed in 1998 and consisted of one Police Service Dog (PSD). In 2006, the Unit expanded to two Police Service Dogs.

Currently our patrol dogs are German Shepherds. The breed is chosen for their physical ability, strength and intelligence. A strong temperament is very important as these dogs are expected to perform in stressful situations. Police Service Dogs have many responsibilities. Their expertise includes tracking, agility, article search, building search, open search, chase and apprehension, and handler protection.

Our handlers are on call twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. All handlers must complete minimum of 70 days training where the handler and dog learn as a team. Training is provided by our policing partners from York Regional Police.

Most of the dogs are imported from eastern European countries such as Belgium, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. We are very grateful for private donations from the community which has assisted with the purchase and maintenance of the dogs. Special thanks to former Mayor Frank Jonkman, Pet Valu (Bradford & Innisfil) and Dr. Derek Boughner from the Disette Street Animal Clinic for your continued support.

These are highly-trained and assertive animals, however, they are able to interact with the public. The Canine Unit responds to over one hundred calls for service a year.

PSD Ronin and PC Matt Tomlin

Ronin is an 8 year old German Shepherd from Slovakia.  Ronin works with great intensity and diligence and has been very successful since he became operational.  He is always full of energy and loves to work.  He serves as a general purpose dog and is also trained in narcotics detection.  Ronin lives with his handler Police Constable Matt Tomlin.  They have served together as a team for over 4 years.

PSD Chase and PC Brett Jacques

Police Constable Brett Jacques has been serving the citizens of South Simcoe since 1986. He has been a trained canine handler since 1999. Brett was the first canine handler for South Simcoe Police, with his partner Sampson. Brett has recently returned for a second tour with the Canine Unit.

Brett’s new partner, Police Service Dog Chase, is a German Shepherd, born in Slovakia. He was brought to Canada to train, and became a PSD in July, 2013. He is qualified in tracking, handler protection, building and area searches, article search, suspect apprehension and obedience. Soon, he will be attending a drug search training program.
